Johann Brandstetter

Johann Brandstetter was born in Germany in 1959. He lives and works between his travels and the studio in Neuötting, bavaria.

Painter, draftsman, illustrator, I design my “life’s works” using both classic and new techniques and thus create complex worlds of images. With my art, I call for a new look at ecological systems and the role that humans play in them. By exploring the boundaries between art and science, I ask myself the question of the meaning of art as a process of observing nature. My ideas arise on trips and excursions, “plein air” so to speak, from viewing and deepening in what is actually natural. I record my “material” from these observations and experiences in sketches and notes in travel diaries. The actual creative process, the transfer into an image composition as its own painterly language, ultimately takes place in the studio. I don‘t just stick to exact observation of nature, it‘s just part of the artistic work process. Rather, my aim is to make the highly complex processes and symbioses of nature visually understandable. For me it‘s about the essentials in the literal sense and so I take the viewer with me on my journey.
