Johann Brandstetter - Rainforest November 24 to February 24, 2024
It takes a special ability to turn precise depictions of nature into works of art in such a way that they open up insights and lead to knowledge. This is possible if the artist himself is an expert in the subject. And he is also able to record in nature what is important for the reproduction. A sketch in a tropical rainforest or the seemingly fleeting glimpse of a butterfly dancing around provide Johann Brandstetter with the inspiration to create a work of art. He is one of the very rare contemporary artists who can combine accuracy of depiction with high expressiveness and captivating style. As a scientist, I therefore enjoy working with him and learning in the process.
Johann Brandstetter together with the photographer Ingo Arndt April 4 to November 5, 2023
Butterflies: “Impostors, drunkards, snoopers...the crazy life of butterflies” An overview of the work of Neuötting painter, draughtsman and illustrator Johann Brandstetter is reminiscent of Alexander von Humboldt's inventory of his expeditions. Based on his knowledge of the natural sciences, his delicate drawings show the beauty of butterflies, meticulously drawing them in detail in their habitats. He works with watercolors, which are applied in several layers of glazes until the impression of a living organism is created. In this way, Brandstetter visualizes complex ecosystems and impressively combines art and biology. Mostly created after precisely documented journeys, his works depict the larger context of nature and its threats.

Johann Brandstetter, Symbioses, the fine art of nature illustration Special exhibition October 14, 2016 to September 30, 2017
His work has gone around the world, his pencil has created images that have become engraved in almost everyone's memory. The Haus der Natur is now presenting a new facet of the multi-award-winning artist Johann Brandstetter's work: "Symbioses, the fine art of nature illustration". By combining art and biology, the exhibition at Haus der Natur becomes a symbiosis itself. In addition to Brandstetter's 32 works, it shows selected original specimens to accompany the tableaux and a film making-of invites visitors to look over the artist's shoulder as he draws. The artistic panels are accompanied by explanations from evolutionary biologist, naturalist and bestselling author Josef H. Reichholf.
